Dan Rather is an actor playing a journalist, and not doing a very good job. But he was pretty when he was younger and now is the darling of the Leftist media. Cuban apparently thought keeping the old guy employed was a good way of preserving a potentially useful tool for future use. After all, many older folks still trust Rather, not having read any news in the past fifteen years.
It's funny how guys like Cuban, once they get a ton of money, suddenly think they're Che Guevara. The Rich Guys Club apparently doesn't like the idea that just anyone can be a member of the Inner Ring, the Membership of Those Who Know What's Best.
As a commenter pointed out, *all* television newspeople, including Murrow, have been poor journalists. They are not there to make sure we get the truth. They are, like most actors, there to entertain us, and if the false news story happens to be more exciting than the truth, well... that's too bad. The sponsors pay the bills, and THEY know what THEY like. And they like viewers, lots of them, suitably entertained (not informed - that's not television's job and never has been) and gratefully purchasing the sponsor's products.
One might also consider that what applied to television (and still does), applies to the internet. Clickz are king. Publish the truth?
